I came across Collide by way of a friend’s Myspace page. This is an email interview that was done many years ago.
Collide - kaRIN & Statik - LA-based - Established 1990 or something like that, we always forget… the years go by like a blur.
1. For people who haven't yet made it to your site, how/why did you get into music on a professional level?
kaRIN: I just like to make things…music is my escape really.
2. What does Collide try to bring to music that separates them from other bands?
kaRIN: That is the beauty of art…give any artist a paintbrush and they will come up with something different.
3. What genre is Collide (I hate genre labels, but they are a necessary evil)?
kaRIN: A crazy blender of sorts…it’s melodic and mechanical…soothing with an edge.
4. What can fans expect at a Collide show?
kaRIN: Passion
5. At the end of the day, what does Collide hope to accomplish?
kaRIN: Art therapy.
6. What are the advantages and disadvantages of a female vocalist? Have you caught any crap about the recent trend of female singers, even though you guys have been around for a while?
kaRiN: I don’t think about, or follow trends…I make art and just hope the rest falls into place. I have never felt like a typical female really.
7. What are the inspirations for your music? What about the vocals?
kaRIN: Life and how it feels to be alive.
8. If you could play with any other artist or band, who or what and why?
kaRIN: I have been pretty lucky in that category and we have worked with some amazing artists so far. Statik and I just released another project called The Secret Meeting with Dean Garcia from the band Curve. That was definitely an amazing experience. Others include… Danny Carey from Tool, cEvin Key from Skinny Puppy, Rhys Fulber from Delerium, the list goes on. If I could pick the next one…I would love to do some guest vocals with Massive Attack …I think that would be just brilliant.
9. Day jobs? If so, what?
kaRIN: Yes, in my day job, I am a designer…I make things…you can see them here…wwwSaintsandSinners.tv
10. What message does Collide wish to send to the world?
kaRIN: I would not say it gives one particular message…in general…I feel that people should think for themselves and be responsible for their actions….that would make a good starting place.
11. If Collide were an animal, which would it be?
kaRIN: I can only speak for myself…I feel like a sleek exotic cat.
12. Tell us about some of the weirdest shit you've experienced as a band.
kaRIN: That would be a stalker story of the crazy, scary variety, which does not need to be given any more energy. The good news is because of it…I got another dog. I had one dog already and now I have two of the most amazing dogs. I love my dogs…they’re like children to me.
13. (Question #13 was a fuckup on my part, and therefore, not answered - Chris.)
14. Why should someone who has never heard you before check you out?
kaRIN: Hmmmm…I feel stumped…why not… it could change your perspective. In my mind every action as a reaction…so you never know what experience will affect you.
15. What is in Collide's future?
kaRIN: More art.
16. (stupid question, struck from history)
17. Getting down to some dirt, tell us about some of the nonsense people have done to get close to kaRIN, or Statik, since musicians, especially females, usually get mauled or wooed by fans on a regular basis. If there is no dirt to be flung here, tell us about your first pet.
kaRIN: It still ends in stalking and it’s a long story better not told. As a child I had lots of cats…my Dad hated cats. Now as I mentioned, I have the most amazing dogs you have ever seen.
They are named Zeus and Luna and they are long haired German Shepherds…one black and one white.
18. Ok, society is a mess and the gene pool may be getting shallower. Give a message of hope:
kaRIN: I am all about clinging on to hope really…I feel that people really need to speak up~!!!
19. (another stupid question)
20. Seriously, sound of on anything that you wish to say about your band, music in general or any other topic. Feel free to do the following: plug anyone and anything, to start shit, to sing a song of sixpence, to reveal shocking secrets, to unleash baby-mama-drama, or just speak your mind(s):
kaRIN: Okay…I think that people are too complacent and need to start making change happen about all sorts of things (endless list)… It seems so simple to me…the world is a very small vulnerable place…it amazes me that we even exist…we all take it for granted.
